the first female host of a late-night talk show that is after making history as permanent host of "the tonight show." her fearless humor changed the rules of comedy.

>> i had her on the first "tonight show." she came out and came over to me and came over and gave me a kiss. >> reporter: jimmy fallon choking up as he remembered joan rivers on "tonight show." the program where she first broke through in 1965. >> they finally, the seventh edition they brought me up and that's because bill cosby said the guy last night bombed, take joan rivers she couldn't be worse. the brash comedian from brooklyn was a regular. the sharp tongue and groundbreaking voice in late-night tv. >> can we talk? >> reporter: rivers landed her own late-night show in 1986, but canceled after just one year. not long after her husband committed suicide. rivers was forced to begin a new chapter, carving out a need as a fashion host and commentator.

>> rip it apart. the flower's gone. >> reporter: bringing that same brash humor to the red carpet. >> most awkward moment on the red carpet. >> anthony hopkins is this your mother, it was his wife. comedy is truth and we should not apologize for it. you're going to get what i think is the truth and it's going to be raw. >> reporter: last thursday in new york city she lost consci s consciousness while undergoing an endoscopy. >> the only people who know what went wrong were the people who were in that room. >> reporter: on thursday, melissa rivers released a statement saying her mother had passed peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends. from david letterman, the force of her comedy was overpowering. on their 2012 reality show "joan and melissa" she talked openly

to her daughter before surgery about what life would be like when she's gone. >> if it ended right now, amazing life and we always had a great ride together. >> i know you're nervous and i feel awful about that. but you don't like to feel like people like you or care about you or want you around. >> it's not about me. it's about you and if something happens, things are fine and life's fine. and life is so much fun. >> reporter: melissa said her mother's greatest joy in life was making people laugh. writing, i know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon. >> what do you want on your tombstone, joan? >> she had a great time. >> funeral services for joan rivers will be held here in new york on sunday. matt? >> erica, thank you very much.

andy cohn considered joan a friend and also a mentor. andy, good morning. we've been talking over the last half day about how much she made us laugh and for how long she's been making us laugh. you were one of those kids watching her on tv at home. >> when she subed for carson, that was like christmas for me every time. she was electroifying. she was one of the first larger than life women i connected to and i couldn't believe everybody in america, the stuff that she said. she was shocking and she was so funny. >> one of the great things about our jobs is that we can grow up watching someone and idlize someone and then eventually we get to meet them. what was the first time you met her? >> reporter: i worked on another morning show and then wound up getting cast on a pilot that bravo did in 2006 called "straight talk" a bunch of gay guys and joan. the first thing she said to me was, you got to get botox.

you have to get botox. and i never did and i was thinking last night, you know, maybe i should get a little shot in tribute to joan. i think it would be a nice tribute to ">=rq). she was generous, i grew up watching her and i'm sitting next to her on this pilot and she wanted me to succeed and she wanted everyone around her to succeed. she was smart, she was shrewd, she was loyal and then went on to come on to my show so many times. >> the loyalty, that's it. in the early days of watch what happens live, like all new shows, it's hard to get guests. you called her one day and said, i need a guest, she was there. >> biggest snow storm that i've ever seen. at that point we were on once a week at midnight. at 11:30 p.m. in the middle of the no storm, we were holding her. i thought she was going to blow away from the wind. she was a little bit of a spit of a thing and there she was in a fur wrapped, at midnight on my show coming from a gig, by the way.

one of the things that is fascinating about the way that everyone is talking about her passing, how shocked everybody was. you don't hear people talking t about how shocked they are about someone passing away. >> anybody who saw her in doing standup in concert over the last year or so realize she was a ball of energy on stage. anything but an 81-year-old. at some point she gets on her back and kicks her feet in the air. >> she was on my show exactly four weeks ago. when she'd come on she'd bring a little piece of paper and say if you could mention any of these topics, that would be great. kanye west, aging and plastic surgery. no greater joy than to sit there and say, so, joan, what do you think of kanye west? she came prepared. she wanted to kill and she always did. >> thanks for sharing your

memories. >> thanks, matt. more on joan's life throughout the morning. let's go back over to natalie. >> matt, thank you. the third american to contract the ebola in africa just returned to the u.s. for the next phase in his treatment. held in isolation in nebraska. ron allen is in omaha. ron, good morning. >> good morning to you, natalie. one of four medical centers in the united states able to treat a patient. we understand that he has just arrived at a nearby military base and will be at the hospital here shortly. they are planning to do everything humanly possible to help this american aide worker make a miraculous recovery. >> reporter: he is on his way back to the u.s. for treatment. a journey that began late thursday as they headed to the airport in liberia. boarding the plane under his own power. a relief to his wife, debbie, back in the u.s. plane under his own

power. >> i just had a call from the doctor who put rick on a plane to come to the united states. he said that rick is clearly sick, but that he was in very good spirits and he walked onto the plane. >> reporter: the 51-year-old sacra contracted ebola at this hospital. he was delivering babies in another part of the hospital. it's the same hospital where dr. kent brantly and nancy writebol were infected with the virus. all three missionaries are friends. sacra and writebol works for s.i.m. and brantly works for samaritan's purse. like the isolation unit at atlanta's emory university hospital used to treat brantly and writebol, doctors at the nebraska medical center say their biocontainment unit is specially designed. but as his treatment begins, he

won't have access to the zmapp experimental medicine because the supply has run out. doctors say they're looking at a number of other experimental medications to perhaps use. they say that they think at this point he's in reasonable shape. they expect him to be here about a week. that all depends upon his condition once he's arrived here. matt and natalie, back to you. >> ron allen in nebraska. thank you. a reminder to see more of matt's interview with survivor kent brantly tonight at 10:00/9:00 central. president obama is wrapping up his trip to europe in a key nato summit today. there are several important developments coming out of that meeting when it comes to isis militants and the crisis in ukraine. chris jansing is in wales traveling with the president. chris, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. and some significant developments out of this nato summit. this morning secretary of state john kerry announcing that a

core coalition of nato countries are coming together to develop a plan to fight isis, reflecting the growing threat with this extremist group. they hope to have that in place later this month. also the united states and the european union developing new sanctions against russia assuming that a cease-fire with ukraine doesn't hold and at this point it doesn't seem to be. a flyover, 22 jets representing nine countries. but the new takeaway, the new agreements that have come out of this nato summit. >> thank you very much. >> chuck todd is nbc's political director and the new moderator of "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> we know you're getting ready. you already lined up an exclusive with none other than the president himself. you've got a lot to talk about. let's start with the latest developments and what we just heard chris jansing saying. the breaking news secretary kerry announcing a coalition

with nato to battle isis. we heard the president and david cameron releasing a joint op-ed saying they're not going to be cowed by killers. is their strategy now appearing to be forming? does it sound like the president is closer to taking action with isis especially in syria? >> it certainly does. what the president outlined last week when he said that statement that the white house wished that many of his aides wish he didn't was we don't have a strategy yet. he said they were going to try to build a coalition, see if they could get multiple countries involveding with then figure out how aggressive they were going to get. does that mean they have to go to congress and get extra authorization. when you look at what's coming on and this is some of the key questions to the president when i sit down with him, are we essentially about to go on a war footing? and which it certainly looks like we are, at that point do we bring in the american people and that means do you go to congress and ask for authorization.

>> of course on the other front you've got the conflict between ukraine and russia. and does it sound like nato members have more of an appetite now to do more than just sanctions at this point, chuck? >> well, you certainly have the eastern european nato members are the most anxious about what's going on with russia and ukraine. the announcement there would be a quick strike force to protect those nato allies that are closest to the russia border, they want that. but i think it's pretty clear you're going to see another round of sanctions. but this takes time. and that's the problem that the administration is facing. is there enough patience in europe for the actions that putin is taking. >> meanwhile you're taking over the reins of the show that's been around since 1947, no pressure, but what are your priorities? >> not falling ining on my fac be priority number one. you sit here and you want the show to feel as if it is doing

what it's supposed to do, what it did when martha roundtree started it which is get the most important news makers on the show. we've got president obama. hold them accountable. get them to explain what's going on, what are their positions, and hope you channel the questions that the american public would like to have answered. so it's a tall order. i'm humbled to be asked to do it. like i said, if i at least not fall on my face the first day, i'll consider that an accomplishment. >> you're going to do great. >> you deal with important topics every week. don't forget to have fun though. >> you got it. >> congrats. >> again you can see chuck's exclusive interview with the president this sunday on "meet the press." willie's here now. he's got more on a tragic story. >> the georgia father accused of intentionally leaving his father in a hot car for seven hours back in june has been indicted for murder. gabe gutierrez is in marietta, georgia, with the latest.

>> reporter: ross harrison's attorney says his client is a broken man having lost everything. but prosecutors are not backing down from their theory that he killed his son on purpose. this morning ross harris faces a grand jury indictment of eight felony counts including malice murder and cruelty to children. district attorney dick reynolds says within the next three weeks he will decide whether to seek the death penalty. >> what would you say to the people that would say this is a rush to judgment? >> i would strongly disagree. i would tell them the evidence speaks for itself. >> reporter: harris had researched hot car deaths online before he intentionally left his season cooper to die inside a scorching suv in june because he wanted a child-free life. this also accused him of sexual exploitation of children for sexting a 16-year-old girl before cooper's death. >> the truth is cooper's death was a horrible, gut wrenching accident.

>> reporter: harris' attorney says his client simply forgot to drop off his son at day care and prosecutors have too many inconsistent theories. >> the truth doesn't need a flowchart to figure it out. >> reporter: not mentioned in the indictment, harris' wife leanna who has stood by her husband. >> gabe gutierrez in marietta, georgia, this morning. thank you. a memorial service will be held for steven sotloff whose beheading was captured on video. the public service expected to take place at a temple in sotloff's hometown of pine crest, florida. earlier this week a vigil was held at the university of south florida where he went to school. he went missing in 2013 while writing about the syrian civil war. the dangerous albino cobra we told you about has been captured. the five-foot-long snake bit a dog and then slithered out of sight.

it was found not far from where it attacked the dog. the snake now being evaluated at the l.a. zoo. and the reigning seattle seahawks proved last night they've still got it. they buried the packers in the regular season opener here on nbc. some 70,000 fans cheered as the seahawks showed their banner before the game. marshawn lynch rushed for 200 yards. russell wilson threw for a couple of scores. seahawks blow out the pack 36-16. it looks like they have not missed a beat since we last saw them in the super bowl. >> as my son was say, the beast! >> beast mode. nice, natalie. >> thank you. let's get a check of the weather from dylan dreyer. she's in for al. >> good morning. we've got hurricane norbert causing problems out in the pacific. it's a fairly large storm but not that powerful. it should weaken into a tropical storm as it makes its way to the

north. right now it is still a hundred miles to the west/southwest of baja, california. now, some moisture is going to stream off of this. it's going to add to the monsoonal moisture we're seeing in the southwest. we could see some flash flooding possible especially across eastern new mexico today. we've got heavier rain to the north and west. and we could end up with 3 to 5 inches of rain in some areas. we'll watch out for flash flooding into the day today. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast coming up in 30 seconds. ♪ ♪ ♪

appearance on tuesday. tom brokaw comes on thursday. maria shriver on friday. we've got great people joining us all next week on "today." >> but first we want to begin this half hour with the rash of shark sightings just off the coast of massachusetts. as we told you on thursday, two kayakers were attacked by a great white shark off plymouth. stephanie gosk is there. >> reporter: you talk to people in this area and they'll tell you this is a pretty popular point. there's good fishing and swimming. it's a good place to kayak or at least it used to be. >> that is a huge white shark, dude! that is a huge white shark! >> reporter: it has been dubbed the year of the shark. so far ida parker and krista orr have the story of the year. >> it came pleatly out of the

water and flipped her over. >> reporter: what came out of the water was a 14-foot great white. no woundeder she sounded terrified in the 911 call. >> we're stuck in the water and there's a shark. >> reporter: calling from her cell phone on the water, orr had little patience for the confused dispatcher. >> it was a seal? >> no, no. there's something in the water. a [ bleep ] great white. >> reporter: they were outside of plymouth bay where this man grew up. he wants to find the shark. >> you have come looking for the shark why? >> curiosity. doesn't everybody want to see a great white? >> reporter: so he took us to the point where the attack took place. this is the time of day you would see it. >> pretty much right now. >> reporter: late in the day. >> what time is it now? >> reporter: 5:15. >> it was 5:40, i think.

5:30. >> reporter: it was the only attack of the summer in massachusetts but there are daily sightings off this coast. >> i think the authorities in the area are going to have to base their recommendations on where people swim and when they swim based on what we're learning about where these sharks are spending their time. >> he's right outside my door. >> reporter: two weeks ago a nearby beach was closed with a nod to the famous movie. fishermen chased down this great white in june. roughly 18 feet long. this is a basically where the attack took place. marine biologists blame it on a big number of seals in the area. the sharks scare the people out of the water. now the harbor master says kayaking here is probably not a good idea. no kidding. advice that comes a little late for parker and orr. >> i'm sure there's great footage. >> amazing footage of us screaming.

>> reporter: so i have yet to see anyone grab a snorkel and mask heading out there for that gopro. but people here are probably going to have to get used to those sharks. they're not going anywhere. >> i know we tried to get you out on a kayak there this morning but i guess that didn't happen. >> reporter: i was under very strict instructions not to get into a kayak. >> it was natalie's suggestion. >> not. >> reporter: thanks, natalie. i appreciate that. let's get a check of the weather now from dylan. >> and we've got storms. we've got a lot more storms expected across parts of the eastern great lakes as we go through the day today and eventually across the southeast. we could see some pockets of stronger storms. but it's in this area in red from the ohio river valley stretching into parts of the eastern great lakes. we have torrential downpours right now. we could even see flooding across parts of the upper peninsula of penn

here. >> reporter: amy van dyken-rouen loves a challenge. >> hit me. that wasn't so bad, actually. >> reporter: from taking on an ice bucket for als to catching a college football game in denver. to surprising us all by leaving the hospital early. and just a week later, walking in an experimental exoskeleton. amy worked hard for three months to get here. she spent eight hours a day in therapy. all along she has publicly shared her good days as well as the bad ones. >> this is not easy and i don't want to portray the fact that because i have a smile on my face that it's easy. it's really not. >> reporter: and in these moments the spirit of the champion with six gold medals. now a new kind of champion, bringing awareness to spinal

cord injuries as she finds herself in a life with big plans and even bigger spirit. amy and tom are with us now. so happy to see you guys. >> it's good to be here. thanks for having us. >> bring me up to date. i saw you almost two months ago. what's going on? >> we been living with tom's mom. the dreaded mother-in-law, she's fabulous. after this we get to go home. >> you're going to go from here back to your home in arizona for the first time since before the accident. and you're going to have to adapt to a different kind of life there. have you been preparing for it? >> i think the whole time i was in rehab i've been preparing for it. i know some of tom's buddies who are builders have been in the house and have been modifying it so it will be easy for me. >> when i was visiting with you, tom and amy, i came back, we heard that story and i can't tell you the response. i know you heard from people also. they were so inspired by your attitude, by her attitude.

tom, let me turn to you. has it always been that positive through these last couple of months or have there been difficult emotional times? >> she's been very, very positive. there's been, obviously, a couple of down days, but it was usually from pain. that was usually it. she never was like why me or anything like that. it's just if she was really, really sore from doing too much and not keeping up with her pain meds. >> let's remember your background. you are a fierce competitor. we got to know that when we watched you in those olympic games. do you think that part of your life helped prepare you for this challenge in your life many. >> absolutely. without a doubt. after the surgery there's that 72-hour period where the doctors said you could go or you could stay. my brother challenged me to a marathon. that fierce competitor said i've got to live so i can beat him in that marathon. >> there was a time at the time

of the accident where you stopped breathing. and you said that you actually had an unusual experience during that time, that you saw something. >> yeah. and i don't know what it was, but it was almost like i was very confined. like very confined and it was like a whitish-green hue around me and i felt very, very at peace. i remember just kind of going through it and all of a sudden i woke up and i'm in the hospital. i don't know what it was. was it the tunnel? i don't know. >> are you a spiritual person? >> i am, yes. >> more so now? >> more so now, of course. you know, there's something bigger and better than me. focus on it a little bit because i'd like to meet that person later rather than sooner. >> goals? have you set big goals for yourself? you told me when i saw you in rehab you want to walk again. >> yes. >> think you can reach that goal? >> i think so, yeah. tom has been setting me up with a guy who does muscle

but i also was aware of her struggles and true trials and tribulations. often in our conversations i would be complaining about, you know, sexism or something about being a girl comic, which is very different than a comedic actress or whatever. she would just say, it's just different for girls. it's just different. and sometimes i would tell her something that i thought was revealing about, did you know that this still happens to women in the industry? i got -- i had a very high-level agent recently on a conference call, call me all kinds of names and scream at me. i had to have dinner with joan and say, did this ever happen to you? of course. guys still talk to women in the industry this way? well on to the next. she was very good at always being on to the next thing. >> you said when you came in this morning and you flew overnight to be here, i appreciate that, one of the things you said to me was said i think it's important we draw a distinction between comedic actresses as you just mentioned and someone who can take the

microphone alone on stage and command the room. >> yeah. and one thing in the great documentary about her called "a piece of work." she said there's nothing they can do to me anymore. i've been fired and insulted. she was really never fired. one thing she would say is, remember, no disrespect to your industry or this wonderful company, but she would often say, remember when it comes to networks and studios or conglomerates, she used to call them replaceable heads. all these executives that go through phases, for two years they love you and you're the hottest thing in the world and the new executive comes in and maybe doesn't get joan. she would say she was fired. you can't fire her because she was always going to go back to stand-up. she just had such a burning desire to hit the mic and she would do qvc and her shows, but that live experience, she did up until her last night before coma. >> new york comedy has always

reminded me of hers and i hope you take that as a compliment. >> absolutely. >> neither one of you, vowed never to go the political correct route. >> or apologize. it's a strict, no apology rule. i think that she understood that that's really what comedy is. and that's our job. so when people get offended or get mad at her, she was very good at letting it roll off her back. her whole thing is who gets it and who doesn't. we're talking about a celebrity upset with her and she would say, they don't get it. what dazzled me is she was able to win over so many of the people in her act. by the way, kathie lee gifford is one of them. she would really mention kathy lee quite a bit in her act and then one day, she said i'm going to her birthday party. i said what? how did you score that invite? she paved the way for me and all

the girls. >> she said in her funeral, she wants the toe tag to be from harry winston and wants a fan hidden in her casket so her hair blows like beyonce's. >> i thought i was in versailles and i was like joan, maybe a little much? she said this is how marie antoinette would have lived if she was a comic. she was so many people but one was making you laugh no matter what it took and a big part of her also was -- did enjoy the finer innings athings and in fa very, very close with the royals and she actually took me four years ago to windsor castle and buckingham palace and we had two amazing nights with charles and camilla, her buds and would go painting with prince charles in balmoral and he adores her. i was very impressed by that. because people maybe would say

i've heard people say a trail blazing female comedian. >> she's a trail blazing woman to break out on stage in a man's world. break in 1965 "the tonight show" with johnny carson. she guest hosted time and time again. the only person johnny would let do that. she joined fox later as the host of the late show that lasted only a few months. that was a bump in the road for her. people remember her hosting fashion police. let's check out some of her funniest moments through the years. >> my body is dropping so fast bugs bunny saw my rear end and said now i know what's not -- >> she's a fashionista but the lace and the jewelry and the earrings, it was more crap on this than you find in a sky mall catalog. >> i knew she didn't like me when she bit the head off the

she included her with her work as much as possible. a beautiful relationship they had. >> we're really lucky this morning. we have a couple of people inspired by joan rivers. two of the funniest in the world. >> i agree. >> let's begin with susie. she got up early in las vegas for us. we're grateful for that. she's headlining at the venetian. what are you thinking this morning, susie? >> willie, i just heard that clip. i started crying again. you know, i'm thinking here i am in vegas and i'm at the venetian where the sands used to be, which is where the rat pack perform. the idea that i could be here, i would never be here without joan. joan was a trailblazer. joan is completely irreplaceable. the hole that's left in the world, there's less laughter in the world now. we were hoping she'd go on another 15 years. it feels so tragic. even though you say she was 81, she had an amazing life. there was so much life in her and so much more that she had to

give us. she was a complete original. she's just not replaceable. >> absolutely. that's amazing you can say that susie. people are replicated, duplicated, copied. there was no one like joan rivers. and that she remained relevant throughout her career. there was a quote i read, she could talk about jackie o to j-lo. >> to me, as a comedian, her resiliency was remarkable. i mean, this woman got shut down and i know as a female comic the struggles she had, even more so than i had when i started 31 years ago. that she just had people in the beginning, i mean, if you read her books and talk to her, that just were telling her she wasn't funny and telling her she had no right to be out there. she was a different kind of comedian, female comedian than came before her. she was aggressive. she was no holds barred and people were -- did not really

readily accept that as a woman. but they accepted it from her because she was so funny. >> what do you think drove her even during the difficult times when people doubted her? >> you know, she just had this thing in her. part of it i think was that she was going to prove everybody wrong because she had so many naysayers when she was young and coming up and didn't have a lot of family support. you know, it's interesting you were talking about joan and melissa as a unit. joan didn't have that. she didn't have that with her own family. they weren't supportive of her. she really wanted to create a different kind of relationship with her own daughter. part of it was she just -- she wanted to make people laugh. that's what drove her. she wanted to make people laugh. that was what she was put on this earth for, she felt. she was right. >> she was absolutely right. >> also, why do you think she was able to be unapologetic. people would say is it too soon for this?

she would say i'm a comedian. >> this is an issue of mine. political correctness is the death of comedy. it's gotten worse because everybody everything is out in the open and everything is tweeted and facebooked. everybody is watching us under a microscope. but the comedian's job is to tell the truth. the comedian's job is to say things even if it's not comfortable but listen and hear it because it's funny. we take everything and twist it and make it funny so you can hear the difficult truth. joan was brilliant at that. she never -- she was fearless. she was completely fearless and she was out there and unapologetic. and that's what comedians should do. nice comedians, it doesn't work. >> a lot of us are huge fans of yours. the legacy lives on. we really appreciate you calling in from vegas. susie he is man headlining at the venetian.

we want to welcome comedian kathy griffin. going to join us here onset. come on over. >> kathy. >> how are you? >> join us. >> can we make room here? >> very nice. thank you. >> excellent. >> i brought my talking points. >> you have a lot to talk about because i mean, you were good friends with her. >> yeah. >> telling great stories about her. >> she was a true friend and a mentor. but also my mission is to make sure that her legacy is everything it deserves to be. so many people know joan from tmz or fashion police, which is great and which she invented. just so you know. invented taking celebrities walking into a building and made it two hours of entertainment. >> sure. >> she was like, truly like no one i ever met. i worked with her several times. we were good buds. we would get together and talk shop. and to know her was to love her. you'll probably be talking to a lot of people who say i met her

one time in a hallway and she was nice. duh. she was more than nice. she was so generous and so good to me and i kind of just forced her to be my mentor and then we became friends. because she blazed the trail that i don't want to get overlooked. we can get hung up on whatever, her going too far, which is not in a comedian's vocabulary. you're doing your job when you go too far and she mastered that. yet, she had a true vulnerability. one thing that was cool, i got to witness firsthand many times where she would be talking about a celebrity and then they would go to dinner later. that's a real art form. >> yeah. >> she was so kind and after her documentary, "a piece of work" came out, we were at a restaurant. she was glad they made it and it's a must watch.

it shows her work ethic which is unparalleled. i don't know if you know this. she was scheduled to do 15 shows in the u.k. in october. i don't know any comedian living or dead that could do three television shows, books and then have such a global reach. it's admirable and you guys saw her work so hard. >> off camera too. she would want to please everyone. she would come over to us and say did that go okay? she was great. >> she was the type of person you met and brag about that to your friends. >> absolutely. >> and so we had dinner recently and my assistant had left my keys at home and i was saying to joan, this is highly unacceptable, right? diva to diva. >> you call them on the phone and make him drive over here with your keys and he has to answer to me. >> my 24-year-old assistant goes over there with a sweatshirt on and she says i insist you sit down, enjoy the meal and it's on

flipped over in philadelphia's overbrook neighborhood. this all happened around 5:00 this morning at the base of the 59th street bridge. police say the driver left the scene and was later found. he was hurt and taken to the hospital and a witness said the car was trying to make a left turn when it crashed into a pole and flipped over. in atlantic city, officials with the trump taj mahal said more notices may be sent to employees in the near future. the casino told state regulators if it doesn't start making more money it could be in trouble. meantime, trump plaza says it may keep its internet gambling operation up and running when the casino shuts down on september 16th. in a petition to casino regulators, they are still weighing their options. we'll have another update in 25 minutes. you can always get the latest news and weather on nbc10.com. we'll send you back to "today." show.

already in the 80s. 78 degrees in philadelphia and allentown at 75. late this afternoon, we could see some showers and thunderstorms with temperatures near 90 degrees. >> thank you, bill. this morning we learned that a 10-year-old boy who was hit by a car in northeast philadelphia has died. the boy was riding his bike around 8:30 last night when he was hit on long shore avenue. the driver did stop and won't face any charges. philadelphia firefighters put out an underground fire in center city that caused smoke to rise from manhole cover. it broke out around midnight at 15th and sanford street. it was not a transformer fire and no power outages reported. this weekend organizers for next year's world meeting of families in philadelphia well take the next steps to prepare for the event. this is video of the delegation earlier at the vatican this year. during a mass on sunday evening, the archbishop will unveil the

from nbc news, this is "today" with kathie lee gifford and hoda kotb from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. >> hey, everybody. it's try day friday. there's sadness in the whole world because a lot of the laugher has gone out of the world. hopefully temporarily, but our good friend joan rivers did pass yesterday. surrounded by family and friends we are told. and -- >> hollywood walk of fame. >> everyone wants to find a way to sort of pay tribute. you know, whether it's putting flowers at her home on the upper

eastside in new york or laying flowers there. >> it's funny, when you think of joan rivers, you've known her for many years, we talked about the old pictures when you hosted with regis. >> she was a consummate guest. any time you could book her, you wanted her. you knew it would be sparks. she never ever ever bored you ever. she electrified whatever show she was on. everybody is talking about what a comic genius she was. nobody disputes that. but the one thing that i love -- look how long ago that was. >> wow. >> yeah. >> wow. >> yes, i have been every color, except my natural color which is gray. >> see, joan would have appreciated that joke. >> she would have. she and i were friends -- colleagues early on. i met her when i first came out to los angeles. but we bonded as really good friends when she stood up for me when i was accused of all kinds of awful things. and she just said are you crazy?

do you know what this -- you know, she stood up for me. and at times it felt like she was the only one was. >> that seems to be the theme. >> right. >> she has the same people in her life over all those years. and she was also -- if you think that your life is hard, and when you fall down and you have a terrible thing, what are you going to do? she is the poster child for how you can get up and do it again and again and again. whether it's being on a late night talk show host, the show getting cancelled. her husband committing suicide. and joan bounced back. whether it was her -- just kind of switching gears and changing directions and suddenly one day, she ends up on the red carpet, asking people what are you wearing? >> who are you wearing? >> who are you wearing? >> right. >> she used to be the people who people -- >> she looks like zsa zsa gabor there. >> she sure does. when you talk about an original, very few originals anymore. >> yeah. >> joan rivers sort of epitomizes that. >> but you're right about the theme.

she was known for her caustic at times humor, but she treated with -- everybody was equal. warm. she'd crack a joke with the electrician like she was cracking a joke with johnny carson. >> she would ask about when she would come on the show, who are you dating, what is he like? she was up on the relationship things. >> she liked love. like she liked people falling in love. >> i heard a story, i don't know if it in one of her books or not. but i hope it's true, because i don't want to pass on something that isn't true. i read on the day her husband actually killed himself, she and melissa went out to dinner that night. and they're looking at the menu and of course devastated and joan looks at melissa and said you know what, honey, if your

dad looked at these prices he'd kill himself again. that's the way she dealt with it. she wasn't a classic hollywood beauty. so she'd point out the obvious. i know i'm not -- then the whole plastic surgery thing she talked about. >> when you talk about -- she talked -- she joked about death a lot. >> yeah. >> would always say, my next move is to the casket. i could go any moment which i say about frank all the time. which is terrible. but you laugh. >> you cope with it. >> she got very serious. i think back in 2012, she was going into surgery, some sort of surgery. we're not sure what it was. a couple of years ago. >> right. >> she had a conversation with her daughter melissa. just before that surgery, and it was part of they reality show. let's look at this conversation. >> all right. if anything happens, melissa -- no, but i'm no chicken. i have had a great life. an amazing life. if i die before, nobody says sew

you up. you're a terrific person. cooper's fine. you're all fine. i have had an amazing life. if it ended right now, amazing life. and you have been wonderful. we've had a great ride together. if something happens, things are fine and life is fine. and life is so much fun. it's one big movie. >> i know. i know. >> oh, my god. >> she enjoyed every moment of it. she just did. she was just great to be around. you hated when she walked out the door, you know? >> how about melissa having that moment though? just thinking like, because certain things you wonder what your parent would say if they had a chance to say something. and she -- she heard it. she said it. she has it captured like forever.

industry. the real issue is that the majority of the kids that are tracking the stats are on are financial grads or accounting grads. so there's so many different categories of college graduates and different industries they go into. there are college graduates working at starbucks. >> and some ceos can't get a job too. >> over lifetime, right. we're averaging out a lot of different kinds of careers from investment banking to working at starbucks. >> so the big question is is it worth it? with all the debt that comes with it, do you think -- is the overall theme that yes, it is worth it or no, it's not? >> i think this is so dependent on the person. so i think for kids who are doing well in school, have good grades, high s.a.t.s, can get into the top college, no question that it would be worth it to you over the long haul to go get a b.a. but i think 245 -- that the vast majority of kids are not in that situation. and they may be facing the choice of going into extraordinary amount of debt to

go to college. first of all, can you make it into the decent college? do you know what you want to do when you get there? >> right. >> right. >> i don't think -- as a kid, you know, maybe taking a year off and working and i think kids who do that and then go back to school, they understand why they're there. they're understanding that they don't want to be working at starbucks maybe for the rest of their life. >> i grew up in the early years in europe, and one thing i think they know instinctively and do very, very well, they watch the kids as they grow. some are academically minded. those are the ones that are steered towards university. other kids aren't, but they love to make stuff. they're going to be -- they're going to be a great electrician or plumber. when my plumbing is out, i don't want a ph.d. at the door. i want a guy who understands how to fix that. >> and more importantly who wants to be doing it. >> who loves it. there's nothing wrong with that. >> where's the passion? it's the passion.

right but it's the same thing asking should everybody get married and have kids? it depends on the individual. that's expensive too. you have to do what you want to do that makes you feel good. >> but steve jobs dropped out of college, i know a lot of -- >> peter jennings. >> peter jennings did. a lot of anchors did. they didn't go and they have big high powered jobs. >> but they never hired a college dropout to run their company. >> and they also had great high school educations to begin with. we have stopped talking about what kids are not getting in k-12. >> so true. >> i think what you need to focus on here is also that people were self-directed. they knew their fashion. but college used to be about helping people find that. >> yeah. >> there used to be an administration that acted. we think we're talking about getting kids in by curfew, but an administration said these are the important things you need to know.
